One of the things that surprised me when I was at SxSW Interactive last year was how all these people, who’s generally personally and professionally invested in “new media,” practically lived and breathe Twitter. While most of my friends, generally considered to be normal everyday people, never heard of it (at the time, it seems yet even more ubiquitous now). I can kind of understand why. A regular person probably looks at something like Twitter and says, “What’s the point?” It’s true that it doesn’t seem like much at first, but it was like my first experience with MySpace when it just got off the ground. I signed up, but I knew no one on it at that time, and thought “What’s the point?” Once you get a small network of friends on it, it’s appeal becomes much more apparent.

ANYWAYS, I said all that to say this: here is a neat little video explaining Twitter in Plain English. I think it’s part of a series of videos that explain web phenomenons to regular people (which, clearly us internet people are NOT).

This is the first time I’ve come back to the conference since 2005, and it’s both bigger and more fun than I remembered. I’ll talk about (maybe?) in more detail when things settle down. In the mean time, I have to say I’ve been inspired to perhaps hit the reset button on my technological presence with this site and others. This site is down about 50% of the time due to my faulty router’s port forwarding issues, so it’s clear no one’s going to miss it much if I take it down for a little restructuring maintenance. First thing, of course, would be to replace that router…

The main portion of the domain is seventeen characters long, and in addition can be tricky to spell since it all runs together and the last letter of the each word is the same as the first letter of the next. I’m looking for something short (~ 10 characters or less) but memorable, and quirky is always good.

I already have some candidates, but I could always use suggestions.

During today’s World Wide Developer’s Conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that both OS X Leopard and iPhone are on schedule for they previously announced release dates, but also a dropped a small bomb in announcing the release of the Safari web browser for Windows. Apple claims that the Safari browser is faster than both Internet Explorer and Firefox in loading and page rendering. From it’s initial release on the Macintosh platform many years ago, Safari has been held in high regard the web design community for it’s adherence to web standards, and it is now a welcome addition to the Windows space. A beta version is currently available.

I can’t help but look at this as sort of a throwing down of the gauntlet by Apple. Long ago, Microsoft created an Internet Explorer for the Macintosh OS, thereby having a significant presence on both platforms. When Microsoft announced that it would no longer develop IE for the Mac, Apple then released the Safari browser to much critical acclaim…and now making it available for Windows sort of smacks of “turnabout is fair play.”

I haven’t talked about it at all, and that’s probably because I haven’t been terribly interested, but version 2 of the Firefox web browser is ready to launch any moment now. I haven’t been paying much attention to it because I’ve been extremely happy with Firefox 1.5, and I usually get wary of major version number upgrades in case the changes are too drastic to my liking. However, typicially being an early-ish adoptor of these kind of things, I decided to download the Release Candidate version this morning and give it a shot. I’m glad to say that it’s stil largely the same Firefox I know and love. The improvements are subtle but nice. However, lots of themes and extensions aren’t quite compatible with it yet. So if you like your extensions, it probably would be a good idea to wait a while to upgrade, especially since the improvements aren’t major and 1.5 is still a great modern browser.

I also installed Internet Explorer 7 on my laptop, and I’ve only toyed with it a little bit. I haven’t put it through the ringer for CSS rendering, which is my main interest, but the initial reaction that it is definitely an improvement. Yay for full PNG support! The UI is actually a little off-putting. It’s a bit changed up from the way IE has been doing it since IE 3. I know Microsoft is on this “let’s try to innovate the UI” kick, but this may be a bit much, especially for all the people who have used their browser for so long. People will eventually find their way around it, but it’s a little jarring. Of course, it’s also nice to finally see IE natively have tabs.

Also, out of the gate for some time now is Opera 9, which is a very solid browser with a lot of great features – many of which were innovated by Opera and has become popular features in more widely-used browsers.

Apparently the people at Microsoft has announced that the first final release of Internet Explorer 7 will be out sometime this month and will be released as one of those automatic critical updates that can be downloaded on “Patch Tuesday”. There’s some speculation that this could be as early as tomorrow.

So, if you’re not careful and not prepared, you may find Internet Explorer 7 on your computer by the end of the week without knowing how it got there.

The current rumor mill about IE7 is that it significantly more secure than IE6, and this was more or less the focus of the IE development team. While a fair amount of CSS bugs are fixed and CSS 2 features missing, apparently there are still plenty of old annoying bugs still around.

Opera 9 Beta has been out for a little while now. Even though Opera is not as popular as IE or even Firefox, it is probably the real leader in web browsing innovation. Opera was the first browser to introduce the concept of tabbed browsing and mouse gestures. The trend now continues as Opera 9 is the first browser to have a built in BitTorrent client in the download manager! And now that Opera is without ads, there is no longer any good excuse to not download it and try it out.

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 has also been announced. Rumors are that it has significant improvements with rendering CSS and following standards and, of course, it comes with a host of new features including native tabbed-browsing and increased security. If what they say is true, then it’ll be a much nicer world out there for web developers if IE users upgrade quickly. No doubt the beta will simply overwrite the IE 6 that is embedded in your Windows, so download it only if you’re willing to deal with using beta software instead of stable software as opposed to having a choice.

One of things that make MySpace popular is that people have the ability to customize their profile pages, albeit through less than ideal means. This has created a small crop of programs or something that will generate layouts and such, but given most people fail to have a reasonable sense of design, it’s caused most of MySpace to look like utter tripe. A real web designer took a shot at trying to make a nice looking MySpace profile and came out on top looking like a champ. I wouldn’t want to go through what he went through trying to wade through all that G-awful markup, but now we can all benefit from the fruits of his labor.

This means that if you download and install IE7 beta now, you can view your sites in it and know exactly how it will look and what adjustments you will need to make before IE7 goes official. It is supposed to be out during the second half of 2006.

Here’s a short amusing article written by the licensing contact for the Mozilla Foundation. A UK Standards officer gets frustrated over the concept of copyleft and Free Software and the fact that is completely permissible to sell copies of free software (the basic gist of Free Software under a copyleft license is that you can take the software and do whatever you darn well please with it…as long as you make the source code freely available). The reasoning:

“…it makes it virtually impossible for us, from a practical point of view, to enforce UK anti-piracy legislation, as it is difficult for us to give general advice to businesses over what is/is not permitted.”

That basically means anything from Flash to Java to AJAX that is put on the Internet that is accessed from any kind of client whatsoever. What’s interesting is the company doesn’t plan to enforce it. Instead, they plan on selling it to the highest bidder, which could involve some very big dogs.

It has been announced that owners of the Nintendo DS will be able leverage the built-in wireless capabilities to browse the web by purchasing a DS card that contains a version of the Opera browser for the DS. I just think that’s pretty neat that Opera is now on the DS. Even though it’s not very popular as a desktop browser, Opera is enjoying some much-deserved success on the mobile market. We have Opera to thank for a lot of browser innovations we now take for granted. They were the first to introduce tabs and mouse gestures, and they have been a shining example of web standard compliance since the beginning.

Also, the final specs and colors for the new DS Lite have been announced. I normally don’t get excited about console releases, especially since I don’t play video games like I used to; but I have a feeling that on the day these things come to the States, I will be making an effort to pick one up. They are just too sexy. Honestly, this may become a repeated ritual when the Revolution comes out. I’m not going to be camping out in any lines, though.

It was recently brought to my attention that IE 7 Beta 2 just came out. I don’t know if I plan to download it and try it out, but I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about it improving support and fixes a lot of the CSS bugs that plague IE 6. Along with that, they finally support and correctly render PNG images with alpha transparency – which has been a long time coming. Here’s a post from the IE Blog about the release and the implications it will have on the current state of IE-related CSS hackery.

Things are already looking good, and if IE users migrate to IE7 quickly, then we can finally have a much easier time developing cross-browser-friendly sites.

The webserver was making strange noises earlier this week, so I had shut it down. I thought maybe that the hard drives were finally giving out (one was from my system when I was a freshman, and the other was from the first system I bought…when I was 16!), but as it turns out, it’s my power supply making funny noises. This is probably the 3rd time or so that a power supply has died on my webserver, although the hard drives have turned out to be real troopers! This particular one I picked up from Goodwill Computerworks no more than maybe 4 months ago. I suppose that’s not surprising.

I actually had another system I was using to compile a new combination backup server/webserver (with FreeBSD 6, MySQL 5, jails, etc.) with the idea of moving everything over into the current web machine when I got everything done. So I decided to move the current setup into that machine so that I could eventually work on configuring the new setup on the machine it is intended for. So for now, this website will enjoy the luxury of running on a Pentium III.

Opera has just announced that it is no longer charging for its ad-free browser, meaning that anyone and everyone can download an annoyance-free full working version of Opera. While I have largely championed Mozilla and Firefox, I also think Opera is an excellent browser. It typically loads and runs faster than Firefox, and it is also the pioneer for many of the more innovative browser features (tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, etc.). Opera is also known for its strict adherence to the W3C spec for HTML and CSS, which of course is a big plus for me.

I am officially registered for SXSW Interactive.

It’s exciting! Really. It’s like summer camp for interactive media geeks. Except instead of cabins you stay in hotel rooms, and it’s much more expensive. Fortunately, since I actually live in Austin, I can just come home and I only pay for parking.

A lot of the bigwigs in web development are sure to be there, and there are usually even a few personalities that would be recognizable to the pop culture conciousness at large.

Admittedly, attending it last year was partially what motivated me to finally overcome my initial reservations to do things like start a blog and open an account on Friendster. I discovered a lot of neat things there. I got to see the Red vs. Blue film and talked with the creators. I got to see the faces and talk to some of the people behind some web phenomenons, big and small. I discovered Magnatune at the IF trade show. I also discovered a few interesting websites that I visit semi-regularly.

That’s even how I first heard about WordPress. I heard the guy who wrote it, “Photo” Matt Mullenweg, mention it during one of the panels. He wasn’t even on the panel, he was in the audience. It wasn’t very high profile then, but now it’s pretty much the most popular blogging software out there (as opposed to a public blogging service.) Even with the kind of rep that tends to go along with these things, I realized that they can be useful and fun elements of the online experience if you use them with tact. So it made me overcome what small fears I had about looking like a conformist and it made me a little prouder to be a geek. Truth be told, though, a lot of people attending that conference could easily out-geek me.

And boy do I envy them.

So, in what is probably not a terribly surprising move, Microsoft announced today that it plans to roll out a beta version of Internet Explorer 7 by the summer, after proclaiming for years that there would be no new version of IE independent of their planned release for their Longhorn OS. IE 7 will be released for Windows XP SP 2 users, and they may consider releasing a version for Windows 2000 as well.

This is all happening, of course, in the wake of the security concerns that have recently been exposed in both Microsoft Windows and IE. Security is the new driving point at Microsoft. The new IE 7 will supposedly also come with anti-spyware and malware preventive features. No doubt, the rise of the popularity of the Firefox browser – which is being touted as the secure alternative on Windows – is also making Microsoft realize it can’t sit back any longer. So, in a way, the existence of Firefox has done it’s job – it’s forcing Microsoft to do something about their outdated browser. The only problem is, all the talk is about security. There is very little being said for improved web standards in IE.

Let me get something straight with everyone: I have never been against IE simply because it was a Microsoft product or because it was insecure. I’ve disliked it because it has stifled web innovation in the past several years with its refusal to change and locking its 95% share into a stagnant technology, and has made it difficult for web designers to create clean, accessible sites that work largely across platforms and browsers. There is little doubt in my mind that they may have intended that. However, partly because of Firefox and IE’s own follies, Microsoft hands have been forced. The result is that there is now a shred of hope and a window of opportunity.

Now that we know there will be an update to IE, us web designers need to work hard to influence Microsoft into making improved CSS support, PNG support, and correct their rendering engine bugs as part of their update. This will still be, as it always has been, an uphill battle. Microsoft will mostly be concerned with doing what it takes to give their users warm and fuzzies. They claim that will be listening for feedback during the beta cycles. We should take advantage.

Things have been looking up for Mozilla more and more all the time. I know lots more people who use Firefox these days, which is great news for me as a web designer. I believe the latest report from WebSideStory states that 5% of web users use Firefox now. That seems pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but that’s a large improvement from where we’ve been. Firefox has been getting a lot of great publicity lately, and now books are even starting to come out about it.

I was rather amused about the title of one which is being published by O’Reilly Books called Don’t Click On The Blue E!
